How To Reverse Engineer A Metal Part

Did you know you don’t necessarily have to have a CAD drawing for ALZA Group to create a part for you? We help many customers reproduce their own parts and components when they don’t have drawings and specs documented. If you need to duplicate a part and don’t know where to begin, ALZA Group’s skilled designers have the expertise to reverse engineer them for you.

We can reverse engineer your metal parts through one of two ways. Read on to learn more!

Reverse Engineering by Hand

One of ALZA Group’s highly experienced designers will review your parts and use old-school engineering techniques to create a CAD drawing. The process involves taking measurements using calipers and other precise measuring tools, verifying angles, and producing a drawing by hand or with CAD software to produce a drawing with CAD/SolidWorks design software. When reverse engineering by hand, we can work with 2D parts, 3D parts, and even complex assemblies.

Reverse Engineering with Laser Scanning

Employ laser-scanning technology to produce a drawing. This involves setting a part on a laser scanner, which uses a laser beam to precisely measure and document a part, and then instantly producing an accurate, detailed CAD drawing that can be exported into SolidWorks for future revision and refinement. At this time, this reverse engineering technique only works for flat parts.

By using the latest AutoCAD and state-of-the-art SolidWorks technology, we can create exact models of formed parts and assemblies that present design ideas before proceeding to cut parts. That’s extremely helpful when working on prototypes or making design changes to a part, because it allows clients to visualize the end product before going to the expense of mass-producing it.

If you’re looking for a way to reproduce a part or assembly and don’t known where to turn for help, contact us. With our expertise and experience in reverse engineering, we can help you manufacture your parts with precision—and save you time and money in the process.
